Chris Carter is the owner of the Coastal Baseball Academy and brings four years of Division 1 experience, five years of professional playing experience, and 1 year of professional coaching experience to the academy. Chris played his high school ball at Jefferson Township High School in Jefferson, NJ. He continued his passion for the game as a four year starter at Coastal Carolina University. While at Coastal he compiled a career .339 batting average which included a .417 average as a senior, which placed him 23rd in the country. During his senior campaign in 2001, he was selected to numerous post season teams including: First Team Big South, All Big South Tournament, and first team South Region division 1. Chris began his professional career in 2002 with the Kalamazoo Kings of the independent Frontier League. During his inaugural season Chris compiled a .329 average with 11 doubles and 11 stolen bases in 69 games. His second professional season began in Kalamazoo and after 58 games, in which he hit .364 (league leader) with 16 doubles and 36 RBI. These numbers made Chris an Eastern Division All Star and he was named to the All League Team. Chris was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Orioles in 2003. He spent two years in the Orioles farm system splitting time between Delmarva (South Atlantic League) and Frederick (Carolina League). During those two seasons Chris compiled a .271 average with 22 doubles and 13 home runs. In 2005 Chris was signed by the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League. He hit .286 with 12 home runs, 73 RBI, and 103 hits in 2005. In his final year, 2006, Chris returned to Washington as a player / coach. While playing left field everyday for the Wild Things, Chris hit .314 (3rd in the league) with 97 hits including 6 triples, 8 home runs, and 48 RBIs. He was selected to the All League Team for 2006 season. At the end of the 2006 season, Chris decided it was time to walk away from the game as a player and begin teaching the game full time. Chris is a career .307 hitter with 504 hits including 74 doubles, 24 triples, and 44 home runs. He ranks in the top 10 in several offensive categories in the Frontier League. His experiences in teaching started at Coastal where he worked the CCU Fall Mini Camps. He has also worked camps at the Baseball Factory, Newberry College, Frederick Keys, Washington Wild Things, and was the Camp Coordinator for the Kalamazoo Kings. He is a veteran of individual lessons and specializes in hitting and defense. In 2008, Chris was the hitting coach of the Washington Wild Things. Adam Vrable

Adam Vrable comes to the Coastal Baseball Academy after four years of collegiate baseball. In the summer of 2003, Vrable signed a national letter of intent to play baseball for Grand Rapids Community College. There he worked his way into the starting line-up and eventually became an All MCCAA Honorable Mention infielder. That year Vrable was a part of the Division 2 World Series Championship team. That summer Vrable transferred to Coastal Carolina where he worked in as a role player his first year playing in 37 games and starting in 20 of them. That season he was fortunate enough to be a part of the winningest season in Coastal history as they won an astounding 50 games and their first ever Number 1 National seeding in the Tempe Regional. Vrable’s junior season in 2006 was his most productive from an individual stand point as he led the Chanticleers in batting average at .324, a team high 57 starts in 57 games, and setting records on defense with 128 put-outs and 162 assists. His last season in 2007 was his most memorable as he was a part of the Chanticleers as they went on to win 50 games and hosted the first regional in Coastal history. He played in 62 of 63 games starting in 61 of them and hit .296 with 59 hits, with 15 of them being extra base hits while leading the team with 16 steals. He re-broke his defensive records compiling 131 put-outs and 211 assists to end the season fielding .963. Adam will be a hitting and defense instructor here at the Coastal Baseball Academy. Willie James

Willie James is a smooth fielding middle infielder who has been giving lessons in the Myrtle Beach area for over 3 years. Willie attended the University of Purdue (IN) and on June 27, 2002 the Atlanta Braves signed him to a minor league contract. Willie played with the Braves minor league system from 2002 to 2006. He was one of the more popular Myrtle Beach Pelicans, playing with them from 2004 – 2006. His speed and great glove turned Willie into a crowd favorite. In 2006 Willie spent some time in AA with the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League. He has since moved on from the Braves and now plays for the Quebec Capitals of the independent CanAm League. Willie helped the Capital capture the league championship in 2006. Willie has always had a great reputation as being a great teammate and a fierce competitor. Through his experiences in professional baseball, Willie has become a valuable instructor at the Coastal Baseball Academy. He has a great understanding of the game, which is evident when watching him instruct and has a great ability of teaching the younger players the essentials of baseball. Scott Sandman

Scott Sandman arrived at CBA in the spring of 2007 where he has continued to build on the success he had in Colorado developing young athletes. Since he began instructing at CBA, Sandman has assisted 5 pitchers in moving on to play at the college level in addition to helping two players garner Toast of the Coast honors, another being named Mingo Bay Classic MVP and a number of younger athletes make their respective all-star teams.

During Sandman’s tenure in Colorado at Thomas Jefferson and Columbine High Schools as a pitching coach, his pitchers would help their teams win three league titles, a District Championship (appeared in three other district title games), finish the regular season ranked in the Top 10 four times and advance to the Final Four. Sandman’s pitchers would achieve many honors including Colorado Rockies Top 50 Seniors (2), All-State Selections (3), and All-League Selections (8). In addition to the regular season accomplishments, Sandman found success in the summer leagues as well. Along with several tournament and league championships, he was the head coach of the Junior Varsity team that brought home a State Championship in 2003 for Columbine High School. Over the years, Scott has had the privilege of coaching many talented athletes who have gone on to compete at the Division I, Division II and Junior College levels. Three players have been drafted and played in the minor leagues. Two are still currently under contract with minor league affiliates of the Brewers and Cardinals.

Kent Altman

Pitching Instructor

Kent Altman comes to Coastal Baseball Academy from Coastal Carolina University. Kent graduated with a Sport Management degree and was a member of the Chanticleers Baseball team for five years. In his career at Coastal, Kent appeared in three NCAA Regionals and one NCAA Super Regional. After completing rehab for Tommy John’s surgery after his freshmen year, Kent was scoreless through his first twenty innings as a Chanticleer. During his junior summer season, Kent was named a Coastal Plain League All-Star while playing with the Florence Redwolves. He finished the summer with a 0.87 ERA with 50 innings pitched. Kent was voted as a captain of the Chanticleers by his teammates during his senior year. In his career with the Chanticleers Kent compiled a career ERA of 3.63 and a record of 6-1. He helped lead the Chanticleers to their first ever Super Regional appearance against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
